I3M (the International Multidisciplinary Modelling & Simulation Multiconference) was successfully organized in Wien during last September 19-21; in fact the event is moving around the World each year involving Top Simulation Experts from Mediterranean, Latin & North Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. The 2012 edition includes over 230 presentations selected among the high number of scientific/technical submissions through a rigorous selection process conducted by the International Program Committee.
I3M 2012 is the 9th edition of the Event therefore even longer traditions are present in some of the classical Conferences included in this Congress such as the EMSS (24th Edition of the European Modelling & Simulation Symposium), HMS (the 14th Editon of the International Conference on Harbour, Maritime & Multimodal Logistics Modelling and Simulation), MAS (the 11 Edition of the International Conference on Modelling & Applied Simulation); in I3M include also IMAACA (The 6th International Conference on Integrated Modeling and Analysis in Applied Control and Automation) and new Workshops very successful such as DHSS (the 2nd International Defense and Homeland Security Simulation Workshop) and I WISH (The International Workshop on Innovative Simulation for Health Care); I3M is also an opportunity to set up special meetings as project workshops (i.e. CAPRICORN Special Session), McLeod Workshop and M&S Network Workshop.
In particular the new I WISH workshop, established this year in Wien and focusing on Health Care and Medicine, was a great successful both in term of attendees and quality of the contributions and represent a very interesting development area for Simulation as point out by Prof.Vera Novak, Harvard Medical School (General Chair I WISH).
The conferences is organized in cooperation by a large number of Institutions and Societies that promote M&S Worldwide: I_M_CS, Simulation Team, Liophant Simulation, McLeod Institute of Technology and Interoperable Modeling & Simulation Genoa, M&S Net, Latvian Simulation Center MIK Riga TU, LSIS University of Marseille, Simulation Center at University of Perugia, FCEIA, National Russian Simulation Society, CIFASIS-CONICET-UNR-UPCAM Argentina, ST DIME University of Genoa, Brasilian Simulation Center at LAMCE UFRJ, Spanish Simulation Center at UAB/UPC Barcelona, MSC-LES at Mechanical Department of University of Calabria, ISA ATC Universidad de la Laguna, ESISA Morocco, NATO M&S Center of Excellence, MIMOS, CEA-IFAC Spain, INSTICC Portugal, IEEE Central and South Italy Chapter; strong support was provided by Austrian Simulation Community; Prof.Agostino Bruzzone and Prof.Yuri Merkuriev as I3M General Chairs opened the event in front of large representative of over 50 countries and each Conference Representative and sponsoring Institution had the opportunity to present their activities; the opening ceremony was closed by Prof.Felix Breiteneker of Wien TU (General Chair of EMSS) by inviting a duet of Engineering Students to play Music as Willkommen Wiener.
The I3M 2012 best papers of each conference and workshop was awarded after a detailed review process during the gala dinner and 6 Special Issues of International Journals will be published with the best selection of I3M manuscripts in topics such as: "Homeland security: a Control System Point of View" (International Journal of Critical Infrastructures), "Modeling, Simulation and Computational Methods for Privacy and Healthcare Information" (International Journal of Privacy and Health Information Management), "Multidisciplinary Modeling and Simulation"(Journal of Computational Science), "The Future of Modeling & Simulation: Applications in Industrial Plants, Processes and Services" (International Journal of Simulation and Process Modelling), etc.
During the Gala Dinner it was presented even the first edition of the Award for Gifted Simulation Students, entitled to Gianni Cantice, Italian Army Colonel and PhD Student; the award allows to young talented students to complete experience in excellence simulation centers and it is supported by the Industrial Sponsors (Lio Tech Ltd., Mast srl and Caltek); next edition application are already available on www.liophant.org/i3m/cantice.
During I3M2012 it was demonstrated the Initiative Smackdown lead by NASA that that allows students to demonstrate the its distributed HLA Federation of Moon Base Activities; the demo connected NASA Space Center in Houston, MIT in Boston, Genoa University and Wien Conference Site; the demo was replicated even during WAMS / NATO CAX Forum in the following week.
The event closed Friday (September 21th) afternoon, by this schedule it was possible for several International Attendees coming from other continents to combine I3M with WAMS2012 / NATO CAX Forum, starting the next monday in Rome; WAMS and NATO CAX Forum attendees in fact continued in the next week the opportunity to meet and discuss on innovative simulation topics.
