MIPET:
Babel as Experience & Lessons for Engineering & Construction
BABELE (Babel Experience & Lessons): Role Play Game Simulation for the Operative Module on Construction of the Genoa University Master in Industrial Plant Engineering & Technologies
March 24, 2012
BABELE (BABel Experience & Lessons) is an Educational Simulation developed ad hoc by Prof.Bruzzone with Colleagues from International Excellence Centers (i.e. NASA, California State University, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, GdF, etc.)
BABELE is obviously inspired by the Bible (Genesi, XI, 4-9 ... Et idcirco vocatum est nomen eius Babel, quia ibi confusum est labium universae terrae, et inde dispersit eos Dominus super faciem universae terrae) and it is focused on the following
major objectives:
Project Management & Construction Experience Achievement:
Communication Problems
Control Problems
Planning Problems
Engineering vs. Erection Critical Issues
Customer Relationships
Internal Management
Development of Capabilities in term of Analysis and Synthesis of each Team:
Result Evaluation and Value Management
Problem Detection & Solution Identification
Decision Making Capabilities
People Management at Individual and Team Level
Synthesis Capability and Lessons Learned Critical Review
Work is based on team organization based on functions, with individuals cooperating for common interest, while all Teams compete each other in order to get best project evaluation.
In fact BABELE is a ECP Project Simulation where the Teams compete on the Construction of a Tower Building for getting the opportunity to
acquire further Construction Projects from final Customers; each Team is divided between two geographic locations (Office and Construction Site);
these have to work physically separated and to be
coordinated along Construction Life Cycle.
Each Team have an articulated organization (Project Manager, Project Engineer, Site Manager, Project Designer,Communication Manager, Business Manager, Engineer Assistant and Site Assistant)
and specific rules to be respected and explicit and implicit requirements; in addition the project evolve dynamically along its Life Cycle.
At the end a final debriefing and analysis on the lessons learned have to be completed by BABELE Attendees.
BABELE is based on dynamic interaction with Top Level Experts from Academia and Industry playing roles of Customers with skills in Project Management, Construction and Human Resource Management.
This specific BABELE experience is result of Simulation Team Joint Cooperation between Prof.Agostino G. Bruzzone (General Director M&S Net), Dott.Antonio Martella (ETEA Group) and F.Madeo (Simulation Team) and it was experienced by MIPET Students.
By the way, during this Babel experience it was organized also a visit to Engineering Faculty Headquarters of Genoa University for executies of Paul Wurth Group (i.e. Dr.Lessmann, Fontana, De Rege, Pollino).
